Social casino vs sweepstakes casino: what's the difference?
By Sam Ledger, Lead Analyst · October 22, 2026

Search for "social casino" and you will find two different products under one name. One is a play-for-fun app with a single coin and no prizes. The other is a dual-currency site that calls itself a social casino but lets you redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes. Trade press calls that second kind a sweepstakes casino, and state laws call it an online sweepstakes game. This guide shows how to tell them apart, and why the difference decides which rules apply to you.
Players use both terms. Over the 12 months to October 2026, US Google search interest split about 51 to 49 between "social casino" and "sweepstakes casino" phrasings, by our read of Google Trends. Searches like "social casino real money" suggest that many people typing "social casino" are looking for the prize-redeeming kind.
Meaning one: play-only social casinos
A play-only social casino runs one currency, usually called coins or chips. You get coins free through daily bonuses, and many apps also sell coin packs. The coins are for play only. They have no cash value, and there is no way to exchange them for a prize.
Because nothing of value can come out, there is no redemption, no sweepstakes rules and usually no identity check beyond an age gate.
Meaning two: sweepstakes casinos that call themselves social
A sweepstakes casino runs two balances. Gold Coins are for play only. Sweeps Coins (SC) are promotional sweepstakes entries, and eligible SC can be redeemed for prizes such as cash or gift cards under the brand's rules. SC usually arrive free, through daily bonuses, mail-in requests, or as a bonus alongside a Gold Coin package. Sweeps Coins are not money. Our coins guide covers how the two balances work.
Many of these brands still describe themselves as social casinos. When we checked the homepages of the top 25 brands on our board on October 22, 2026, 22 used "social casino" as their main self-description, in the page title, headline, meta description or opening copy. None led with "sweepstakes casino" on its own. Deeper in the same sites, in the rules and the coin names, the word "sweepstakes" appears on 17 of the 25.
| Feature | Play-only social casino | Sweepstakes casino |
|---|---|---|
| Currencies | One coin, for play only | Gold Coins for play, plus Sweeps Coins |
| Prizes | None | Eligible SC can be redeemed for prizes |
| Free entry method | None, since there are no prizes | Yes, such as a mail-in request or daily bonus |
| Identity checks | Usually just an age gate | Usually required before a redemption |
| Target of state bans | Generally not, on the wording we read | Yes, in the states that passed bans |
Why sweepstakes brands use the social casino label
Advertising rules are one documented pressure. On October 28, 2025, Google updated its Gambling and Games ads policy and named sweepstake casinos as outside the scope of its social casino games policy and ineligible for certification under it. That gives brands a reason to present as free-to-play entertainment, and "social casino, free to play" fits that frame.
The industry is also shaping its own vocabulary. In November 2025, the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance, an industry trade group, introduced "Social Plus" as its name for free-to-play social casino games with sweepstakes features, as reported by CasinoBeats. None of this changes how a product works. It changes what it is called.
The label tells you how a brand describes itself. The coins tell you what it is.
How to tell which one you're looking at
- Count the balances. A second coin, often called Sweeps Coins or SC (some brands use their own name), is the first sign of the sweepstakes model.
- Look for a Redeem or Prizes option in the account menu.
- Open the official sweepstakes rules. "No purchase necessary" and a free way to get entries, such as a mail-in request, mean a sweepstakes.
- Read the redemption section: playthrough, minimum amounts and payout methods only exist where prizes do.
- Check whether the brand verifies your identity (KYC) before it pays a redemption.
- Check the excluded states list and the minimum age, which can be 18+ or 21+.
If there is no second coin, no redeem option and no sweepstakes rules, you are looking at a play-only social casino. If you find all three, it is a sweepstakes casino, whatever its homepage calls it.
Why the difference matters
State bans are written around the prize path. California's AB 831 defines an online sweepstakes game by its dual-currency system and its award of cash or cash equivalents. New York's S5935A targets online games that use a dual-currency system letting the player exchange the currency for a cash prize. New Jersey's 2025 law uses similar dual-currency wording. On that wording, a single-currency social casino with no prize path generally falls outside these bans. That is our reading of the text, not a legal opinion. Our guides on whether sweepstakes casinos are legal and what happens when a state bans them cover the state list.
Redemption rules, identity checks and taxes only enter the picture when prizes do. A sweepstakes casino generally verifies your identity before it pays a redemption, and it sets playthrough requirements and minimums. Prizes can have tax implications. If you redeem, check with a tax professional about your own situation.
Do social casinos pay real money?
A play-only social casino does not pay out anything. Its coins have no cash value and cannot be redeemed, by design.
A sweepstakes casino, even one that calls itself social, lets you redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes under its rules. Expect a playthrough requirement before free SC counts as redeemable, a minimum redemption amount, and an identity check first. Purchases buy Gold Coins, and the official rules we have read say no purchase is necessary to take part. Our redemption guide walks through each step.
So when a search result promises a "social casino that pays real money", read it as a sweepstakes casino, and check its rules, excluded states and minimum age before you play.
Frequently asked questions
What is a social casino?
Strictly, a play-for-fun app with one currency, no cash value and no prizes. In practice, many dual-currency sweepstakes casinos also call themselves social casinos, even though they let you redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes. The coins and the rules tell you which one you are looking at.
Do social casinos pay real money?
A play-only social casino does not pay out anything, because its coins cannot be redeemed. A sweepstakes casino, even one that calls itself social, lets you redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes such as cash or gift cards, after playthrough, minimums and identity checks set by its rules.
How redemption worksIs a sweepstakes casino the same as a social casino?
Not exactly. Sweepstakes casinos offer the same kind of casino-style games as social casinos, but not every social casino is a sweepstakes casino. The difference is the second currency and the prize path. If there is a coin you can redeem for prizes, it is a sweepstakes casino.
Are social casinos legal where sweepstakes casinos are banned?
The California and New York laws we read define the banned games by a dual-currency system that lets players exchange currency for a cash prize or cash equivalent. A play-only social casino has no prize path, so on that wording it generally falls outside those bans. That is our reading of the text, not a legal opinion, and other laws can still apply.

Brands rarely explain their labels, but there are documented pressures. Google's ads policy, updated October 28, 2025, puts sweepstake casinos outside the scope of its social casino games policy, and an industry trade group has promoted the term "Social Plus" for free-to-play games with sweepstakes features.
The Ledger Line
About half of US search interest in this category uses "social casino", and 22 of the top 25 brands on our board use the phrase too. We rank the dual-currency model because that is where prizes, redemption rules and state law meet. We measure, you play: we track how each brand's coins, rules and redemptions work, and we date every check.
